Some people may think that the growing number of food recalls is all in their heads or due to increased social media coverage, but in fact, the total number of food recalls in the U.S. increased by 10% between 2013 and 2018.
Each year, one in six Americans gets sick from consuming contaminated food or beverages, and the medical and industry costs of these illnesses exceed $15.5 billion. A significant cause of foodborne illness is contaminated fresh produce, which leads to nearly half of cases.
As of April 17th this year, the CDC and several states announced that they are investigating a multi-state outbreak of Listeria infections linked to deli-sliced meats and cheeses. The investigation is ongoing.
